I've been made a "scapegoat" by SLC, says Angelo Mathews on his sacking

The board asked Mathews to resign from his position after the disaster campaign in the Asia Cup.

Reacting on the move to sack him from the captain's position by Sri Lanka Cricket(SLC), Angelo Mathews has said that the board made him a "scapegoat" in the aftermath of country's absolutely poor performance in the ongoing Asia Cup.

Sri Lanka replaced Angelo Mathews and officially appointed right-hand batsman Dinesh Chandimal as their One-Day Internationals Captain, after asking the former to resign.

The team couldn't even make it to the second round of the ongoing Asia Cup 2018 in United Arab Emirates, as the Island nation lost quite one-sidedly to both their Group opponents Bangladesh and Afghanistan.

The limited overs game has, for a while, been Sri Lanka's worst performing format and hence, the selectors decided to make a change in the side's leadership.

On the development, a media release stated that the SLC has "requested Angelo Mathews to relinquish his duties as the National ODI & T20I captain, with immediate effect."

Now, Mathews issued his response in a letter to the board and wrote, “I have been made the scapegoat in this entire saga of Sri Lanka’s dismal performance against Bangladesh and Afghanistan in the Asia Cup,” and added, "I'm willing to take part of the blame but at the same time, feel betrayed and let down if the blame is solely on me."
