Former Indian captain MS Dhoni, who led India in 199 ODI matches, had stepped down from captaincy very early in 2017. He handed over the full-time captaincy to Virat Kohli and there is a reason behind it.

Dhoni usually has a logical explanation for his steps taken on and off the field. He tried to explain his reason to leave captaincy and make Virat full-time Indian captain in all three formats.

During his visit to a motivational programme with Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) at Birsa Munda Airport, Ranchi, the 37-year-old was asked about quitting captaincy and he replied, “I resigned from captaincy because I wanted the new captain to get enough time for preparing a team before the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019."

As per the SportsRush reports, Dhoni added, “Selecting a strong team without giving the new captain appropriate time isn’t possible. I believe that I left the captaincy at the right time."

Under Dhoni's captaincy, India won 110 ODI matches and lost 74 games. There are only three captains who have led India in over 100 games. Sourav Ganguly and Mohammad Azharuddin are other two, however, Dhoni has the best winning percentage and that makes him the most successful ODI captain for India.

Current Indian skipper Virat Kohli has led India to 52 matches till now. India has an impressive stats under him as well. They have won 76.47% matches in Virat-led matches.
