Mithali Raj, Indian Women's Test and One-Day International captain, has credited the ICC Women's Championship for narrowing the gap between the top and the bottom teams.

At the moment, Indian Womens' team are in Sri Lanka to play three Women's Championship ODIs and five T20 Internationals starting with the first ODI on 11 September in Galle.

While the second and third ODIs are scheduled to play on 13 and 16 September,  the T20Is to be played on 19, 21, 22, 24 and 25 September respectively.

India are currently No.4 ranked team on the MRF Tyres ICC Women's Team Rankings, will play eighth-ranked Sri Lanka in the limited overs series, but Mithali believes that the gap was much closer than what the table suggested.

As per reports in icc-cricket.com, Mithali told reporters in Colombo, “We have played Sri Lanka in the World Cup, in the Asia Cup and I should admit that it's a team that has grown from year to year. Now the gap between the top teams and the bottom teams is narrowing because of the ICC Women's Championship.”

She also lauded Sri Lankan skipper Chamari Athapaththu, saying her game shows how far women's cricket has progressed in the Island.

Athapaththu was the first Sri Lankan cricketer to play in the Big Bash League, representing Melbourne Renegades last year in the Women's Big Bash League.

Raj signed off by saying, “You do have a player here who is representing Sri Lanka in the Big Bash League. That in itself should show that you have a very strong team, but India definitely is very positive about our own performance on the field.”
