India’s left-arm orthodox spinner Akshar Patel continued to impress himself in his maiden county stint for Durham. Patel recorded his career-best bowling figures (7 for 54) in first-class cricket while playing against Warwickshire in a Division 2 clash at Edgbaston, Birmingham.

Akshar took 9 wickets in the match across two innings. Some of his victims included renowned names like Ian Bell, Jeetan Patel, Olly Stone and Tim Ambrose.

During his brilliant spell, Patel also affected one of the most bizarre dismissals to get rid of Warwickshire speedster Ryan Sidebottom. The ball was played towards the short leg by Sidebottom and remarkably it struck the fielder and flew to Akshar, who completed a simple catch.

As far as the outcome is concerned – the match ended in a draw. While Durham had fallen 18 runs short of Warwickshire’s first innings score of 310, they were 115/8 chasing 218 in the fourth innings.

It was Akshar Patel’s second noteworthy performance for Durham in the span of three matches. On his county debut last month, the 24-year-old has batted wonderfully well with the tail-enders to score an unbeaten 95 off 99 balls in an innings win over Glamorgan.

Akshar, who was recently named in India’s Asia Cup squad, has represented the country in 38 ODIs and 11 T20Is, claiming 45 and 9 wickets respectively. He has been signed with Durham for their last six Championship games.
