Essex captain Ryan ten Doeschate believes that England’s all-time leading Test run-scorer, Alastair Cook, has still "got a lot of cricket in him", as the opener will continue to play county cricket for the 2019 season at Chelmsford after announcing his impending retirement from International Cricket.

Cook will retire from the international game after England's fifth Test against India starting from 7 September at The Oval but confirmed to be available for Essex for at least 2019 season and Doeschate is thrilled with his return to the team.

Doeschate told Sky Sports, “He's only 33 and I think a sustained period of cricket and that enjoyment that he still gets from doing well suits him and suits us amazingly well. I think he's still got a lot of cricket in him. It's great for us and obviously we'll be delighted to have him around. He's a great bloke.”

Meanwhile, the 33-year-old Cook scoring 11,627 runs as an opener is sixth in the list of all-time Test run-scorer, has struggled this year, averaging 18.62 in 16 innings and even managed to score just 109 runs with the highest score of 29 in his seven innings against India in the ongoing five-match Test series. Cook has scored 12,254 runs and made 32 centuries in 160 Tests as a player.

He signed off by saying, “Cricket achievements aside, his humility and his desire for the game and to share his knowledge is truly inspiring for everyone to see.”

Essex will play Surrey in the Specsavers County Championship fixture at home on Wednesday (5 September).
