It would be nice to replace Alastair Cook but we’ll have to wait and see, says Rory Burns

Alastair Cook’s announcement of his impending retirement from international cricket has opened the door for the opening slot in the England Test team and ever since he broke the news, there are few names are doing the rounds in the County circuit to replace him in the squad.

Surrey skipper Rory Burns is one of those and the leading name to fill the huge void left by Cook in the English line-up for the longest format of the game.

However, the 28-year-old, who became the first batsman this summer to pass 1,000 County Championship runs just a day after Cook’s retirement, is excited to replace the legendary Test cricketer but preferred to wait and watch before commenting anything on his selection.

Burns further went on to praise Cook for his contribution to England cricket and opted to play safe and didn’t comment much on the possibilities of him replacing the veteran opener in the team, whose next Test assignment is the Sri Lanka tour in November 2018.

As per reports in Morning Star, Burns said, “He’s had a great career. I don’t think I could do it justice with what I say about him. If there’s a spot going there it would be nice but we’ll have to wait and see.”

Noteworthy, Cook will continue to feature in the County circuit next year for Essex.
