A victory in the 2nd ODI was Ireland’s first win of the series which came at the right time else it would have been too late for them. Now, both the sides have won 1 game each, waiting for the 3rd game to be played on August 31 in Belfast. Ireland’s performance hasn’t been upto the mark and they would want to end this series as the winners. The whole series has come to an end but Ireland’s batting didn’t look that much effective in even one of the battles. They can still make some effort and bat well in the 3rd ODI to grab a much-needed win. Just like Ireland, the Asian squad too were not at their best in batting. Atleast 3 players should score half-centuries if Afghanistan have to correct their past mistakes. Well, it’s their luck that they are winning despite batting failure.

Best economical pick – Hazratullah Zazai scored consecutive half-centuries in the two T20Is, but the runs have dried up in the ODIs. The change in formats certainly hasn’t helped his cause, but he’s young and he’s talented. If he can click in the decider, Ireland’s chances will diminish rather quickly.

Top captains & vice captains – Having failed to make a mark in the T20Is and the first ODI, Paul Stirling finally came good for Ireland in the second ODI, and scored an important 39. It resulted in Ireland’s best performance with the bat so far against Afghanistan, and if he can give Balbirnie that support once again, Ireland can realistically hope for the best in the decider. Andrew Balbirnie is looking in fine form with scores of 55 and 60 in the first two ODIs respectively and he will hold the key to Ireland's batting in this series decider. While Gary Wilson and Paul Stirling scored 38 and 39 runs in first and second ODI respectively and the team will need these two to play a good knock in next game as well.

Smart pick – Tim Murtagh has claimed a four-wicket haul in each of the two games and he will be his skipper's go-to man when it comes to bowling. While he was well supported by Boyd Rankin and Peter Chase, who have bowled well in both the matches and have been able to maintain constant pressure on the Afghan batsmen.

Cautious Pick – Hazratullah Zazai scored consecutive half-centuries in the T20Is, but he has been dismissed for 14 and 1 in the ODIs.Mohammad Shahzad’s usual gung-ho feats were missed as well, and Afghanistan have a problem facing the new ball. All of which means the final ODI might well come down to the batting – the side that copes better can come away with the series.

My XI – Paul Stirling (Captain), Andrew Balbirnie (Vice-Captain), Rashid Khan, Tim Murtagh, Mujeeb Zadran, Asghar Stanikzai,William Porterfield, Gary Wilson, Simi Singh, Hazratullah, Gulbadin Naib
