David Warner's wife Candice on Saturday (August 25) said that the suspension of his husband from international cricket has affected the family financially. However, she defended Warner's flashy lifestyle.
Warner has been suspended by Cricket Australia (CA) for a period of 12 months after he was found to be the instigator behind the shameful act that took place during the third day’s play at Newlands in March.
“Yes, David drives a nice car but why can't he? He's worked really hard for that and it's something that he always dreamt of, so that's a little reward for himself,” Candice said in an exclusive interview with The Daily Telegraph.
“He didn't just go out on the spur of the moment and buy a brand new Lamborghini,” she added.
The proud mother of two daughters, Candice, also went on to say that their family hit rock bottom in the aftermath of the ball-tampering scandal and that the crisis was an opportunity for them to take stock of their lives.
“We've been able to assess everything and it's been great,” she remarked.
In May 2018, Candice told The Australian Women's Weekly that she suffered a depressing miscarriage following the reveal of her husband’s involvement in the disgraceful ball-tampering saga.
“I was bleeding. We knew I was miscarrying. We held one another and cried,' Candice told the magazine. The miscarriage was a tragic consequence, a heartbreaking end to a horror tour,” Candice had said.
The South Africa tour was a nightmare for David Warner on and off the field. During the first Test in Durban, the former Aussie opener was seen pointing and directing a verbal barrage at Proteas wicketkeeper Quinton de Kock outside the team’s dressing room, before he was restrained and taken away by his teammates.
Consequently, Warner was charged for breaching Level 2 of the ICC Code of Conduct and was fined 75 percent of his match fee (approximately $13,500) in addition to three demerit points.
In the aftermath of the spat, the South African crowd got stuck into Warner in Port Elizabeth and Cape Town. The Protea fans were spotted wearing Sonny Bill Williams masks to taunt Warner’s wife during the first day of the second Test against Australia at St George's Park, while an old South African supporter passed some personal remarks towards Warner when he climbed the stairs following his dismissal in the third Test at Newlands.
