Reports suggest Gautam Gambhir might contest elections from Delhi on BJP ticket

If reports are to be believed, BJP is close to convincing Gambhir to joining the party.

Gautam Gambhir is reportedly set to join BJP and contest in next year's general elections from DelhiOut-of-favour India and Delhi opener Gautam Gambhir is all set to become the latest cricketer to join the political scene, as reports suggest that he will be joining the Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP) and might contest in the next general elections from Delhi.

BJP-led NDA is currently in power with PM Narendra Modi leading the party at the center. Delhi is currently governed by the AAP party with Arvind Kejriwal as the Chief Minister.

As per a report in national daily, Dainik Jagaran, BJP is likely to convince Gambhir to contest in the upcoming general elections from Delhi. 

Gautam Gambhir is known for his patriotism and support for the armed forces and fits the bill for BJP party. His popularity as a cricketer for India and Delhi is enough for him to give a fight to experienced politicians in the next elections.

If the move turns out to be a reality, it will see Gambhir join the likes of Mohammad Azharuddin and Navjot Singh Sindhu in joining politics after cricket. Gambhir last played for India in 2016 in a Test match against England.

A motivated individual, Gambhir has often batted for welfare work for the general public, including several donations for the army personnel. He has been a regular for Delhi in Indian domestic scene.

Gambhir played an instrumental role in India's triumphs in both the 2007 T20I World Cup and the 2011 ODI World Cup. Gambhir has played 58 Tests and 147 ODIs for India, amassing 9392 runs in total including 20 centuries. He has also led IPL franchise Kolkata Knight Riders to two IPL titles in 2012 and 2014.
