Mithali, Veda, Deepti to captain teams in the upcoming Women's T20 Challenger Trophy

The Women's T20 Challenger Trophy is slated to be played between August 14 and 21 at Alur in Bengaluru.

Harmanpreet and Mandhana won't take part in Women's T20 Challenger Trophy due to their commitments in KSL.

Leading India women cricketers – Mithali Raj, Deepti Sharma and Veda Krishnamurthy are all set to captain the Blue, Red and Green teams respectively in the upcoming Women's T20 Challenger Trophy.

On Wednesday (August 1), the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced a list of 39 players equally divided into three teams that will take part in the tournament. The Women's T20 Challenger Trophy is slated to be played between August 14 and 21 at Alur in Bengaluru.

India’s women T20I skipper Harmanpreet Kaur and opening batswoman Smriti Mandhana are the notable omissions from this tournament owing to their commitments in the ongoing Kia Super League in England. While Harmanpreet is playing for Lancashire Thunder in the showpiece event, Mandhana is representing the Western Storm.

Earlier, the Challenger Trophy used to be played in the 50-over format. However, BCCI's expanded 2018-19 domestic season for Women’s cricket led to the change in format.  The tournament is considered as a vital preparation for ICC Women’s World Twenty20, slated to be played from November 9 in West Indies.
