Jul 25, 2018, saw general elections taking place in Pakistan. The elections saw three parties in former Pakistan cricket captain Imran Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), Pakistan Muslim League (PML) headed by Shehbaz Sharif and Pakistan People’s Party (PPP), led by Bilawal Bhutto Zardari took part in the elections.

The elections were fought for 269 seats and a single party had to win 137 seats to gain the overall majority. The results saw Imran Khan’s PTI winning 109 seats and Khan announced his victory and promised a new Pakistan, free of violence and corruption and better relations with neighbors India.

New agencies worldwide had their eyes and ears on the Pakistani elections and BBC Newsnight in their eagerness to break the news committed a big blunder.

The news channel was showing a video montage of Imran Khan’s journey from cricket to politics, however, the video showed Wasim Akram terrorizing batsmen and sending the stumps cartwheeling.

Social media pounced on the error by BBC and at end of the show, Evan Davis, a presenter, said, “We made a mistake in our opening tonight. The footage we showed was of the cricketer Wasim Akram, not Imran Khan. Don’t know how that happened, sincere apologies.

One fan took the opportunity to post a congratulatory tweet to Wasim’s wife Shaniera saying, “Your husband is about to be the Prime Minister of Pakistan. Congrats

To which, Shaniera retorted in equally humorous way, saying, “He said he was only going to Lahore to vote!
