Danushka Gunathilaka receives clean chit in rape case

Sri Lankan Cricket had suspended Gunathilaka from all forms of International cricket with immediate effect for violating the “player code of conduct”.

Sri Lanka batsman Danushka Gunathilaka has received a clean chit in the rape case involving his friend.

After the incident came into the public domain on Sunday (July 22), Sri Lankan Cricket suspended Gunathilaka from all forms of International cricket with immediate effect for violating the “player code of conduct”.

However, the Officer-In-Charge (OIC) of the Kollupitiya Police Station where a Norwegian woman charged Gunathilaka’s friend of raping her in a hotel room in presence of the Sri Lanka opener, said in a statement to dailymirror.lk, “We are not holding any further inquiries against this cricketer. SLC is free to investigate him for breaching the ‘Player Code of Conduct’”.

He also revealed that Gunathilaka’s friend, a club-level cricketer in England has been taken into custody for his offence.

“We have arrested and remanded his friend who is alleged to have raped a Norwegian girl. It is a non-bailable offence. His friend is a club cricketer in England and he came to Sri Lanka to meet his father,” the officer added.

Sri Lanka Cricket had suspended Gunathilaka on a "misconduct" charge, although he was allowed to complete the second Test against South Africa. The southpaw scored 57 and 61 in the two innings as Sri Lanka defeated South Africa by 199 runs Sinhalese Sports Club, Colombo.
