Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) on Thursday (July 12) provisionally suspended the right-handed opening batsman Ahmad Shahzad for failing a dope test. Shahzad was tested positive for consuming a prohibited substance during a domestic tournament in April-May.

The PCB in a media release stated that Shahzad had been given until July 18 to inform whether he wishes to have his sample B tested by July 27.

“The PCB has also provisionally suspended Shahzad pending the outcome of the charges,” the statement read.

As per the media reports, Ahmad Shahzad failed the dope test after traces of marijuana were found in his urine sample during the Pakistan Cup in Faisalabad in May.

Earlier, the PCB had asked the Anti-Doping Agency of Pakistan to carry out an Independent Review Board and give their verdict on whether a valid Therapeutic Use Exemption existed and whether there had been a departure from international standards of testing.

Subsequently, the independent board gave its finding to the board and then issued the notice of charge to Shahzad for failing the dope test.

Shahzad is yet to say anything on the matter but he is likely to face a ban of up to two years, as per the PCB officials if he fails to please the cricket board with his response.

Shahzad is not the first Pakistani cricketer to fail a dope test. He joins the list of Pakistani cricketers, including Shoaib Akhtar, Muhammad Asif, Abdul Rehman, Reza Hasan and Yasir Shah, who have been tested positive for consuming a prohibited substance.
