Former Indian off-spinner, Ramesh Powar is likely to become the next head coach of Indian domestic Cricket powerhouse Mumbai Ranji Trophy team. Powar recently applied for the post after Mumbai cricket association(MCA) invited applications for the post and is one of the strongest candidates to be appointed as the head coach of the 41 times Ranji champions.

As per a report in the Press Trust of India (PTI), Powar, Vinayak Samant and Pradeep Sundaram have been called for the interview for the coveted post. Among the three former players, Powar looks the favourite to take over the job.

After featuring in 148 first-class games and spending 14 years as a cricketer for Mumbai, Powar's 470 first-class wickets earned him the India cap, as he played 2 Test matches and 31 ODIs in International cricket.

Powar later went onto finding a place in different camps across various seasons of the Indian Premier League before finally retiring from the game at the end of 2015/16 Ranji Trophy season.

It has also been reported that former India wicket-keeper, Ajay Ratra has not been called for the interview. Ratra was associated with the Punjab Ranji Trophy team in the previous season after taking over the role.

His application for the post came as a surprise as Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) has never appointed any outstation player as the coach of its Ranji Trophy team. Ratra played for Haryana in domestic cricket.MCA does not have many options to choose from as despite extending the deadline to apply for the job, the application process did not draw a massive response, as the state association expected. MCA will announce the successor of Sameer Dighe soon. Dighe, who was appointed as the head coach of Mumbai before 2017/18 season, succeeded Chandrakant Pandit in the job.
