Arjuna Ranatunga, Sri Lankan 1996 World Cup-winning captain, on Tuesday (26 June), has lashed out at country’s Cricket Board (Sri Lanka Cricket) for not handling the recent ball-tampering controversy in a proper way.  

The latest ball-tampering episode has emerged in the recently concluded three-match Test series between Sri Lanka and West Indies in St Lucia. During the second Test, Sri Lankan captain Dinesh Chandimal was caught on camera applying a substance to the ball.

Later, Chandimal was found guilty of altering the condition of the ball and fined 100 percent of his match fee and banned from the third and final Test in Barbados, which won by the Islanders to tie the series 1-1.

Besides Chandimal, Sri Lanka's head coach Chandika Hathurusingha and Team Manager Asanka Gurusingha were also charged for violating the spirit of the game over the protest.

Meanwhile, Ranatunga said the SLC officials were to blame for the wrongdoing that happened in the West Indies. As per reports in AFP, Ranatunga said, “There is no one at the cricket board to advise the team. If they knew that Chandimal had done something wrong, they should have worked out an amicable solution without escalating the problem.”

On the other hand, Chandimal was handed two suspension points and fined 100 percent of his match fee for his offense as he violated the  ICC Code of Conduct during the second Test.

The sport's global governing body –International Cricket Council (ICC) is likely to take further actions against Chandimal and the two Sri Lanka officials on July 10.
