Former Indian cricketer, Madan Lal remembered India's maiden World Cup win after long 35 years. June 25, 1983 little did any Indian cricket stars know what kind of impact it would make on the coming generations.

It was today in 1983 that Kapil Dev's led side won their maiden World Cup after beating the mighty West Indians by 43 runs in the final match. While the bets were on the defending champions to make it for the third time in history.

Indian cricket team were bowled out for 183 after West Indian bowlers wrap up their innings in 54 overs. It was Madan Lal alongside with Mohinder Amarnath's spell that helped India dissolve West Indies on 140. The duo clinched 6 wickets to make it tough for the defending champions.

On recalling India's first ever World Cup win, Madan Lal admitted "It is a historic day. A lot of time has passed since...35 years. It was the best thing that happened to our lives. We always wanted to win," Lal told India today.

Madan Lal even revealed that they held their nerves while playing against the best team in the world as they only had 183 runs to defend in the final of the tournament. The win changed the life of all these former cricketers and Madan Lal just highlighted the importance of that victory. 

"With that sort of score to defend, you are always worried whether you would win. To be honest, it was a scary feeling. What if we didn't win? Will we get another chance? What if someone dropped a catch? You will always be remembered for dropping a catch during a World Cup final," he added.

Six years later, a 16-year old lad named Sachin Tendulkar made his International debut against Pakistan and ruled world cricket for 24 years. Since then India has produced some world class cricketers and won the World Cup 2011 after 28 years.

Between these 28 years, India has performed really well in cricket. India reached the semi-finals in 1987 and 1992. In World Cup 2003, they were disappointed to lose the final against Australia who were the winners of 2003 World Cup.

In 2015, India once again lost to Australia in the semi-finals of 2015 World Cup, leaving their heart broken with players like Virat Kohli getting out early in the match.
