Indian wicket-keeper batsman Parthiv Patel has recently appeared on Gaurav Kapoor’s chat show ‘Breakfast with Champions’, where he revealed the ups and downs of his cricketing career so far.

The Gujarat skipper is a bit unlucky when it comes to cementing a place in the national side and plays continually at the domestic circuit despite having made International debut at just age of 17.

With his outstanding display at the domestic circuit, Parthiv got selected in 2002 for India’s England tour and since then he has played only 25 Tests, while his One Day career has had a similar fate, as the left-hander has played only 38 matches since making debut in 2003.

Later, Parthiv was ignored for the keeper’s role in the national side as there was Dinesh Karthik who was given a few chances in 2004 but since then, the team found MS Dhoni in 2005 who since then has been India's first choice keeper in all conditions. Later MS Dhoni led the Indian team to 3 World Cup chances in 2007, 2011 and 2013.

During the show, Gaurav said he feels many good wicketkeepers like Parthiv and Dinesh Karthik were born in the wrong time, because of MS Dhoni, as they did not get the chance to stay in the team for a long time.

He asked the cricketer whether he agrees with him, the 33-year-old replied, “There is no doubt that Dhoni is a legend. Many people often say to me that you were born in the wrong era, but I think that we started playing before Dhoni, if we did not do poor performance then how could Dhoni get chance? So, it is better to think do not think much about that and accept that we have not used our ability potentially which gave Dhoni the opportunity to cement his spot in the side.”

In the show, Patel has admitted that there was a stage when he got all negative regarding his career with Team India, but his strong desire and self-belief helped him to boost his confidence.

He further added, “I would be lying if I said that I did not have negative vibes in my career. There were multiple times where I thought, “Why am I still doing this?” But I had a strong desire and self-belief that I wanted to play for India again. That was what keep spurring me on.”

Parthiv signed off by saying, “But there were obviously phases where I questioned myself. There were times when I had scored 700-800 runs in the Ranji Trophy but someone who had scored 200-300 runs was picked ahead of me.”
