Smriti Mandhana to become the first Indian women cricketer to play in Kia Super League

Mandhana had led the Trailblazers team in the women's T20 exhibition game in IPL 2018.

Kia Super League team Western Storm is ready to sign Indian women team opener Smriti Mandhana as their second overseas player for the 2018 season of the tournament. Mandhana will be first Indian cricketer to feature in the women's cricket super league.

As per Western Storm's official website, Head Coach Trevor Griffin said: “We are really excited that Smriti will be joining us. She is one of the brightest young talents in the game at the moment. Although she is still young, she has a great deal of experience of the game at the highest level and we believe that she will prove to be an excellent signing.”

Smriti is eager to be a part of the league. She said it's an honor for her to join the famous Kia super league. “I am very excited to be playing for the Kia Super League champions. To be the first Indian player to appear in the tournament is a real honor and I hope that I can help Western Storm to more success.”

Smriti Mandhana follows the footsteps of her teammate Harmanpreet Kaur, who had signed up with the Surrey Stars for the Kia Super League in 2017. However, due to a shoulder injury, she sustained in the ICC Women’s World Cup 2017, Harmanpreet missed out on the chance to take part in the league.

21-year-old left-handed Mandhana has scored over 826 runs with a high score of 76 in the 40 T20Is.

Other overseas players to play for Western Storm are Lizelle Lee (South Africa), Rachel Priest (New Zealand), Stafanie Taylor (West Indies), and Holly Huddleston (New Zealand).
