WI v SL 2018: Angelo Mathews returns home from West Indies for personal reasons

Mathews was actually making a return after a 5 month lay off.

Sri Lanka has suffered a major blow in the ongoing three-match Test series against West Indies, as they've lost the services of their most experienced player. Angelo Mathew will be returning back home due to serious personal reasons. Sri Lanka, already 1-0 down after the huge loss at Port of Spain, would've wanted Mathews to lead the recovery act with his blade in the next game but won't have him available for selection.

It is highly unfortunate that Sri Lanka's talisman and a likely candidate to join the illustrious list of the great batsmen from the island nation has been hurt regularly with ill-timed injuries. Mathews was actually making a comeback in this series and was out from the game for the last 5 months due to a series of hamstring and calf injuries, and so, this must be seriously disappointing for the former captain.

Mathews scored 11 and 31 in the loss and would've likely made a progression with his score in the series.

The other bad news for the Dinesh Chandimal led side is that they've lost the workhorse of their side as well, as Lahiru Gamage fractured his finger while batting during the late stages of the first stage.

According to Cricbuzz, Dasun Shanaka and Danushka Gunathilaka were flown in as replacements and were expected to reach the Caribbean late Wednesday night. Both players will not be considered for selection for the second Test.

The next match at Darren Sammy National Cricket Stadium in Gros Islet, St Lucia starts on 6th June Wednesday.
