Australian fast-bowler Kane Richardson is all set to play the White-ball cricket this month and confident to lead to national pace attack in England despite not spending much time at the international arena.
The 27-year-old South Australian recalled for the five-match One Day International series and lone T20 International in England starting with the One-day practice match County Ground, Hove on 7 June (Thursday) followed by first ODI at the Lord’s on 9 June (Saturday).
With Australian premier fast-bowling trio of Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood ruled out of the English tour with various injuries, the responsibility to lead the young guns likes of Andrew Tye, Jhye Richardson, Billy Stanlake, Marcus Stoinis and the uncapped Michael Neser, would be certainly hanging on the shoulders of Kane Richardson in England. Though, the pacer is ready for the challenge.
As per reports in ESPNcricinfo, Richardson said when he was asked about his senior status in the squad, “That's a first, and probably a last I think. I've been around long enough but been in and out. I take it as [showing] a bit of leadership towards our young buys in Billy and Jhye. But Nathan Lyon is on this tour and he's pretty senior in terms of the pecking order in Test cricket so we are a pretty big group.”
He added, “Being in the county of where the World Cup will help, but obviously those three guys will be back at some stage so it's all about doing as much as you can when you get the opportunity.”
Richardson, who has only played 15 ODIs so far since making debut in 2013, is the most experienced bowler in the squad at the moment, as other bowlers have just combined experience of just 7 ODIs, is thinking to follow the old strategy that they did against New Zealand and England in the last T20I tri-series to win in the UK this time.
He further went on to explain, “That's what I thought about on the plane over, it's actually quite a similar team to the one in the T20s that beat England and New Zealand. Although we're inexperienced we've done pretty well as an attack together. That's all we are thinking about.”
Richardson signed off by saying, “You get confidence when you're together, and you're young and you do well. Those guys, especially Billy (Stanlake), would have taken so much out of that tournament. AJ (Tye) is quite a senior bowler in terms of international and domestic cricket (he was the leading wicket-taker in this year's IPL tournament) so there are guys in our team full of confidence.”
