BCCI has never allowed Indian players to participate in foreign T20 leagues like the Big Bash League, NatWest T20 Blast, and others. However, if reports are to be believed, ICC is bringing in sweeping changes to the T20 game scheduling, that may change BCCI’s mind.

In a first of its kind, The New Indian Express reports suggest that ICC is planning to introduce three separate windows for T20 leagues which will be divided into three regions — Asia, UK and the Caribbean and the Southern Hemisphere. With discussions on advanced stage, the plans may only become concrete in the 2022-23 calendar year.

 These windows will enable the Indian team players to feature in the Caribbean Premier League, the NatWest T20 Blast,and the Big Bash League among others, aside from the Indian Premier League (IPL).

The talks and discussion on creating windows for T20 leagues came after the Federation of International Cricketers Association published a report that stated increase in the number of players are inclined towards becoming T20 freelancers over playing for their respective national teams.

BCCI has been ever reluctant in giving NOCs to the Indian players citing India's busy international schedules. BCCI even denied clearance to FC cricketers to play in foreign leagues, despite them getting offers to play.

A prime example was that of Yusuf Pathan, who initially received permission from BCCI to play in the Hong Kong T20 Blitz for Kowloon Cantons, but later BCCI made a u-turn and revoked the permission.

"We have been having informal discussions on this. One school of thought is it will give players exposure and help upcoming players. It is still a long way ahead, but more and more boards are making noise on having Indian players in their leagues. The BCCI wanted to keep the brand IPL intact; hence they were not allowed to participate in other leagues. But after 11 years, it shouldn't have a problem," sources told TNIE.
