Australian legend Shane Warne opened up about his perpetuated feud with fellow Australian teammate Adam Gilchrist, who will now work with Warne for Fox Sports cricket commentary team.
The feud between Warne and Gilchrist goes back before Gilchrist even made his Australia debut and put on their baggy green. It is reported that Warne and Gilchrist’s relationship started on a sour note when Gilchrist was picked for Australia ahead of Warne’s close friend and South Australia wicketkeeper Darren Berry.
Warne reportedly insulted Gilchrist in a domestic match between Victoria and Western Australia in the late 1990s for being “goody-two-shoes”. An anonymous player told the Herald Sun, “I don’t think (Gilchrist) ever forgot it.”
The feud between Gilchrist and Warne got uglier as Warne lost his vice-captaincy to the young dashing wicketkeeper, despite being on the road to becoming Australian captain. It happened because of the revealing text message scandal of Warne with a nurse, which got international air time.
“Me and Gilly have had a few things over the years here and there that we haven’t seen eye-to-eye on,” Warne said in an interview with Triple M.
Warne further said, “Disagreements and things like that ... but when you play with someone over a long period of time, just because you disagree on certain things, it doesn’t mean you don’t like the guy, or you hate the guy. We get along fine, and we’ll have a great time (commentating).”
With Australia’s cricket broadcasting rights going to Fox Sports, former Australian players like Gilchrist, Mark Waugh, Allan Border, Brendon Julian, Mike Hussey, Mel Jones, Isa Guha and Michael Vaughan will join Shane Warne in what is described as broadcasting “revolution”.
Warne had even picked Gilchrist in his “best Australian XI” in a column for cricket.com.au in 2015.
“The keeping position was a really tough one as Ian Healy was comfortably the best keeper in my time from any country. We have so much batting, did I need Gilly’s batting? (That) was the question, (but) at the end of the day, I only just went with Gilly as his batting was insane,” wrote Warne on his Facebook page.
