Lalchand Rajput, the former Mumbai Cricketer and coach of the ICC World T20 winning Indian Team in 2007, has come out and stated that it is important to know the players in any set-up for a coach before he joins in and that his planning has already started for the role for Zimbabwe. 

Lalchand was announced as the interim head coach of the national team by the Zimbabwe Cricket Board(ZCB) yesterday, after Heath Streak's unceremonious departure from his post after Zimbabwe's exit from the ICC world cup qualifier. 

The 56-year-old spoke to SportStar recently about the new development in his coaching career, and said, “I am new to the country, so it is important that I know the players well, and also get to know the board. If all goes well, we will think (of renewing the contract) further, The focus now is the tri-series(Zim-Aus-Pak) and we will take a call on the future after it gets over.”

“They asked me if I would be interested, and since there is no cricket in India in between June and August, I thought of utilizing this time,” 

The whole Zimbabwe cricket structure is struggling but Lalchand feels he can make a change. He said, “I feel I am a turnaround man. I did it for India in the 2007 World T20, and then won the series in Australia. When I took charge of Afghanistan, not many were aware of their strength. Now, people are talking about them. Maybe that’s why Zimbabwe officials have thought that I am good enough. I like challenges. It is a great thing to turn things around,”
