India skipper Virat Kohli’s physical transformation in recent times has grabbed the eyeballs of one and all in the cricketing fraternity. In fact, a lot of the members of Indian cricket team even got inspired by his fitness regime and consequently started training with discipline.

Kohli, who is leading the Royal Challengers Bangalore franchise in the ongoing IPL, has often attributed his stellar showing with the bat to his intense fitness regime. However, in order to attain such flawless health condition, the 29-year-old has made serious changes in his eating habits and lifestyle.

Speaking to Pune Mirror, Kohli recently advised his budding athletes to keep a daily check on every minute detail of what’s being consumed.

“By doing this repeatedly, you will be able to maintain your ‘aspirational’ fitness level. These practices will help you keep your consistency and professional standards at optimal levels. I definitely don’t think that everyone should eat in a similar way. Instead, each one should personalise their diet,” Virat said.

Over the last few years, Kohli has always endorsed the healthy, organic and homecooked foods and he doesn’t have a cheat day even when on rest.

“I always prefer a protein-rich sandwich over a burger. A rest day cannot be a cheat day that negates whatever you have achieved during the week; small quantities of whatever you crave, eaten slowly, works best,” he added.

The Indian captain’s dinner time constitutes a protein-heavy diet of soups, salads and lightly-sautéed vegetables along with lamb chops or pink salmon.

“During the day, I eat a lot of nuts and gluten-free snacks because I feel they give me the right kind of carbohydrates required daily. I eat a lot of foxnuts, which are gluten free and multi-grain chips, which provide the nourishment of seven grains,” Virat disclosed.

Disciplined food choices are not the only thing that ensures Kohli’s unparalleled fitness. He is deeply committed to his exercise regimen, depending on his work schedule.

“During the off-season period, it is all about working on building muscle mass. The workouts require much more work. I concentrate mainly on my lower body and strengthening my legs and back, which are required for my sport. I focus on functional exercises that my sport requires rather than the ones that make my body look good. During season, I mainly focus on maintaining and building my fitness and stamina levels,” he asserted.

Kohli’s intense workout session consists of lifting, power running at intervals on the treadmill and bike sets.

“When I am travelling, these three exercises are my basic routine. My closest alternatives to them are looking for a mix-and-match of equipment to resemble my daily workout. If there is a barbell or any lifting plates available, then I am sorted for my lifting set. In the absence of a treadmill, I enjoy doing cross-country runs and love a good cycle ride in whichever city I am,” Kohli concluded.
