Former England skipper Nasser Hussain has hailed Virat Kohli’s decision to play county cricket before the all-important England tour later this year. Kohli was officially signed by Surrey on Thursday (May 3) for the 2018 English county season.

The Indian captain will be available for all matches throughout the month of June until the close of Surrey’s trip to Scarborough to face Yorkshire, as confirmed by Surrey’s official website.

Taking to micro-blogging site Twitter, Hussain wrote: “Fair play to Virat Kohli .. in a time where some cricketers are reducing their red ball exposure.. the busiest cricketer on the planet is putting it first to prepare for a test series in England .. giving himself the best chance to succeed!!”.

Even though Kohli has conquered more or less every condition with his willow in Test cricket, he has not been able to perform at his best on England soil. With just 134 runs in five Test matches at a dismal average of 13.40, doing well in England is a top priority for the India captain.

Besides Kohli, India’s leading batsman Cheteshwar Pujara, speedster Ishant Sharma are also featuring in county cricket to ready themselves for the England tour. While Pujara is playing for Yorkshire, Ishant is representing Sussex.

India’s tour of England will kick off from July 3 where they will play three T20Is and as many ODIs before featuring in a five-match Test series from August 1.
