The 2005 Greg Chappell and Sourav Ganguly saga had stunned the Indian Cricket. The differences between then India coach Greg Chappell and Ganguly led to the removal of Ganguly as captain and saw vice-captain Rahul Dravid's elevation to the captaincy.

Following the controversy, many believed that Dravid’s played a big role in the matter;  but Ganguly dispelled those rumors saying that he doesn't feel that Dravid had anything to do in Greg Chappell's decisions.

Speaking to India TV, Ganguly said, “I don't think Rahul Dravid had any role (in Greg Chappell's decisions). It happens that when a coach is really after something, the captain must listen to the coach. I had a word with Rahul a couple of times and he told me that you'll be back. But yes, one thing is for sure, it was evident that the coach was against me.”

On being asked about his comeback following the Chappell drama, the 'Prince of Kolkata' replied, “I had immense self-belief in myself. When you know that every game is a do-or-die match, there is a different level of determination. I was lucky that I had the experience of handling such a situation. For any young player, it won't be easy to handle because people break down mentally.”

Noteworthy, Chappell was not happy with Ganguly’s effort with the bat during the period and wanted him to step down as skipper to focus on his batting, but Ganguly did not agree with him, and Chappell had reportedly suggested dropping him from the Zimbabwe tour opener.  

Learning this, Ganguly decided to leave the tour but management forced him to stay with the team, and later reports emerged that he faked an injury during that match and made defiant comments to the media.

Later, former coach criticized Ganguly as being "mentally and physically unfit" to lead the team and then he was dropped from subsequent ODI and Test squads.
