A month after resigning as spin bowling coach of the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) academy at BKC, a great coaching opportunity from Australia dropped in at Ramesh Powar’ cap.

Mid-day reportedly said that the former Indian off-spinner Powar has been signed up as Coach by Cricket Australia (CA) for its young spinners.

It is also learned that Australian legend and former India coach Greg Chappell has suggested Ramesh’s name to CA for the role.

If the latest reports in Mid-day are to be believed, Powar has now become the only second Indian after former Tamil Nadu cricketer Sridharan Sriram, who was roped in as spin bowling coach by Australia last year, to coach the Kangaroos.

Powar said about the development, “I am happy to inform you that I have been invited by CA to Brisbane in June to coach young spinners. It was Chappell who recommended my name to CA. I thank him and Troy Cooley, head coach of their National Performance Programme, for giving me the opportunity.”

The 39-year-old played two Tests and 31 One Day Internationals, taking six Test wickets and 34 ODI wickets for India between 2004 and 2007.

While he was outstanding for Mumbai at the First-Class level, the burly spinner has taken 470 wickets in 148 games.
