The much-awaited New Zealand’s first-ever Day/Night Test at home soil against England has begun at Eden Park, Auckland on Thursday (22 March).

However, the two-match Test series opener Day 1 was daunting for the touring side, as they have ended their first innings at merely 58 (Trent Boult took 6 wickets for 32) –second lowest Test total posted by England after 45 against Australia at the Sydney Cricket Ground in 1877.

Well, it was a celebrated day for the Black Caps, as the hosts displayed some sizzling bowling in Auckland and never gave a single chance to Joe Root and his team to make a comeback in the first innings.

England batsmen felt helpless in front of the moving ball from Boult and Southee. Five England batsmen registered ducks including Root, Stokes and Bairstow.  Craig Overton top-scored for England scoring an unbeaten 33 with Mark Stoneman scoring 11 runs, the second England batsman to score in double figures.

However, it was a complete show by the Kiwis, as they were brilliant in all departments from bowling, fielding to batting, as they are at 175/3 at stumps, leading 117 runs at Eden Park.

New Zealand skipper –Kane Williamson, who is a superb fielder and has taken some stunning catches over the course of his cricketing career, was outstanding on Day 1 of the first Test against England.

Taking the position between gully and fourth slip, Williamson pulled off a screamer in the slips to dismiss the left-hander Stuart Broad from a striking delivery by Tim Southee.

However, the ball took a wide outside edge of Broad’ willow, but Williamson quickly dived full length onto his left side, and caught the ball out of the slight air, giving local fans another chance to celebrate.
