Scotland’s hopes of qualifying for the ICC World Cup 2018 has vanished with their five-run defeat via the Duckworth/Lewis method to the West Indies in a do-or-die game of the Qualifiers on Wednesday (21 March).

With the win, West Indies qualified for the mega event in England next year. Batting first, the Caribbean side posted a decent total 198 (48.4 Ovs) on the board, though it was not too big score for Scotland to chase down but rain hampered play.

Scotland needed 94 runs off 111 balls to win the Super Six game and qualify for the World Cup next year.  Everything was going well until the controversial decision to give Richie Berrington out lbw for 33 to a ball costs them as they fell short of 5 runs against Windies.

If the decision was given in their favor, Scotland would have been three runs ahead on DLS method, and Captain Kyle Coetzer said that LBW decision proved costly to his side.

As per BBC, Coetzer said, “The lbw decision is not sitting very well with us. It has cost us, and it's cost us a lot of money as well. They won the game fair and square in the end, but a competition like this... DRS? You're playing with people's livelihoods and there's a lot of money at stake and it proved costly today.”

He added, “In a competition like this it comes down to a big game like that. We are feeling pretty rough right now. There's a lot of emotion going round. They’re sat upstairs right now, and finding it pretty tough at the moment. It’s not the way we wanted to end the tournament but we look back and it’s five runs it’s just five runs. And it’s something pretty important that could have happened there.”

Coetzer signed off by saying, “This is emotional. Extremely proud of the effort put in by the boys. We have shown what we are capable of. Our seam bowling throughout the tournament has been exceptional. Top quality in the competition. WI bowling attack has been brutal. Credit to Jason and his team for getting through. Well done and thanks to our boys. It's been exceptional.”
