India’s legendary wicketkeeper-batsman Mahendra Singh Dhoni has come out in support of his team-mate Mohammed Shami, concerning the derogatory allegations labelled against the pacer by his wife Hasin Jahan.

In an exclusive interview with Jansatta.com, Dhoni said, “As much as I know, Shami is a great human being and he can’t cheat his wife and country.”

Dhoni, who has played an instrumental role in Shami’s development as a fast bowler over the years, also urged the media and public to not comment on the paceman’s personal life.

“It is Shami’s personal life and we should not comment on it,” he added.

Earlier, former Indian skipper Kapil Dev had also backed Shami saying that he doesn’t believe in the allegations made against Shami by his wife.

“I refuse to believe the allegations that have been leveled by Shami’s wife. If she knew about match-fixing then why didn’t she report it earlier? When the relationship was fine, why was she silent then? There is an investigation team. Let them do their work. If Shami has done something like this then it is unacceptable and disgraceful,” Kapil had said to ABP News.

“Shami is a brilliant hardworking cricketer. I agree that his personal relationship is in trouble currently but such kinds of allegations by his wife are nasty and sickening until proven,” he further added.

It is pertinent to mention here that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has put Shami's contract on hold after the news of infidelity claim emerged out against him on Tuesday (March 6). The BCCI announced the Annual Player Contracts for its men and women cricketers on Wednesday (March 7).

Talking about the on-going controversy, former India opener Chetan Chauhan has said it is his personal issue and it has nothing to do with cricket and the BCCI should not withhold his contract.

“The good thing is they have not cancelled the contract and only withheld it. I think the contract should go on because as far as the cricketer’s ability is concerned, it has nothing to do with it. And also he has not been pronounced guilty by the court,” Chauhan said while talking to new agency ANI.

Shami was one of the stars of Indian bowling attack that had taken 60 wickets during the recent three-match Test series against South Africa. The right-armer had scalped 15 wickets in that series at an incredible average of 17.06. He was instrumental in India’s victory in the third Test at Wanderers. Owing to Shami’s 5 for 28, India had won the Wanderers Test by 63 runs.
