New Zealand opener Martin Guptill has secured the most expensive bid in the Caribbean Premier League 2018 draft on Thursday (March 1) in London.

Guptill, who has represented Guyana Amazon Warriors in the last season, had entered into the CPL auction with a base price of $US90,000. The 31-year-old was roped in by Barbados Tridents for $US160,000.

Guptill was one of the six players who got paid the maximum price by their franchises.

West Indian opener Lendl Simmons, who was released by the Jamaica Tallawahs, got picked by St Lucia Stars for the same amount as Guptill. Chris Gayle, Andre Russell, Dwayne Bravo and Sohail Tanvir were the other players who fetched a handsome sum of $US160,000.

Russell, who is returning to cricket after serving his one-year doping ban, was retained by the Tallawahs. A pre-decided marquee set of players did not enter the draft, directly negotiating contracts with the franchises.

In a season which witnessed the maximum number of transfers, Kieron Pollard was the biggest earner. Having led the Jamaica Tallawahs for four seasons, Pollard asked the franchise to release him. St Lucia Stars were quick to grab him in the marquee round for USD 130,000.

Former Pakistan captains Shahid Afridi (Tallawahs) and Shoaib Malik (Amazon Warriors), swashbuckling openers Evin Lewis (Patriots) and Chris Lynn (Knight Riders) were the other players to feature in the marquee list.

After becoming the first ever Nepal cricketer to secure an IPL contract in January this year, leg-spinner Sandeep Lamichhane took another giant stride as he got picked by St Kitts and Nevis Patriots for $US 5,000. Interestingly, the 17-year-old Lamichhane hadn't set a base price before entering the auction.
