Sourav Ganguly is widely credited for turning around the fortunes of Indian cricket as captain, especially outside India. Ganguly taught the Indian team to compete outside India and win and he laid a foundation for the team; groomed players, who served the nation for a decade and has etched his name in the Indian cricket history with gold.

MS Dhoni is widely regarded in the same league as Ganguly, when it comes to captaincy and with the kind of achievements Dhoni has, he can very well claim to be the best Indian captain ever.

However, in his recently released autobiography ‘A Century is Not Enough’, Ganguly has touched upon many uneasy issues and one of them is to pick the greatest captain in the history of cricket.

In an interview with NDTV, Ganguly tackled this question and spoke about MS Dhoni’s tenure as Indian captain; however, he felt that Dhoni should have done better in Tests.

 “Very difficult to compare, although MS (Dhoni) has been fabulous. MS in the shorter format has been a remarkable captain, fantastic record, may be in the Test format he should have done a bit better,” opined Ganguly.

Sourav Ganguly opted for his one time rival captain Australia’s Steve Waugh as the greatest captain in cricket history. “Virat (Kohli) has got the capabilities of becoming a very very good captain, but for me the greatest captain is Steve Waugh,” Ganguly added.

Ganguly has praised MS Dhoni a lot in his book.

"I had over the years constantly looked out for players who remain steady under pressure and possess the capability to change the course of the match. Mahendra Singh Dhoni, who came to my notice in 2004, was a natural progression of this thought. I was impressed with MS Dhoni from day one," Ganguly had written in his autobiography.

"I wish I'd Dhoni in my 2003 World Cup team. I was told that when we were playing the 2003 World Cup final he was still a ticket collector with Indian Railways. Unbelievable!" he added.
