Nearly ten years since his retirement from international cricket, former India captain Sourav Ganguly has hit back at Greg Chappell in his new book ‘A Century is Not Enough’, accusing the Australian great of doing the “unthinkable”.

The ugly spat between the Chappell and Ganguly emerged in 2005 after the latter went public stating that the coach was the main man behind his sacking as a captain.

 “This (2005) remains the most turbulent chapter of my life. Not only was my captaincy suddenly taken away for no reason but I was also dropped as a player. I feel angry even as I write this,” Ganguly wrote.

“What happened was unthinkable. Unacceptable. Unforgivable,” he added.

When Chappell was appointed as India’s chief coach in July 2005, Ganguly was serving a six-match ban imposed on him by the ICC for slow over rate. India’s vice-captain Rahul Dravid was leading the team in the tour of Zimbabwe in September 2005.

However, later in the year, Ganguly was removed as a skipper permanently. In February 2006, when the squad for the home series against England was named, the Prince of Kolkata didn’t find a place in the team either.

It was a chaotic time in Indian cricket in which accusations flew from both sides and reached at the al-time low when the country crashed out in the group stage of the 2007 World Cup — Chappell’s last tournament in charge.

“History hasn’t recorded many instances of a winning captain being dropped so unceremoniously, that too after scoring a hundred in the last Test series. In Indian cricket there are no such parallels and I doubt whether there will ever be.

“So Mr Gregory Stephen Chappell and the selection committee led by Kiran More have indeed put me in august company,” Ganguly penned it down.

On Sunday (February 25), Ganguly revealed to the Hindustan Times that he has not spoken to Chappell since 2007. Moreover, Dada is not the only Indian to take a shot at Chappell after retirement.

In his 2014 autobiography, ‘Playing It My Way’, batting maestro Sachin Tendulkar had also accused Chappell of playing the role of a ring master.
