Rahul Dravid says 50 lakhs cash reward unfair; entire support staff worked as a team

BCCI announced cash rewards for the team, Dravid and support staff in a press release.

Rahul Dravid was awarded 50 lakhs cash prize by BCCI for U19 World Cup win

India U19 team became the most successful team in the U19 cricket history, when it won the 2018 U19 World Cup win in New Zealand over Australia. The team was coached by former India captain Rahul Dravid and he was ecstatic with the team’s win.

The BCCI announced cash rewards for the whole team, coach Dravid and the support staff. However, now Dravid has a question to the BCCI. Why the disparity in cash prizes between him, his support staff and the winning squad?

BCCI had announced Rs. 50 lakhs to Rahul Dravid, 30 lakhs to each player and 20 lakhs each to the support staff, for winning the World Cup. Now Dravid mentioned that the whole support staff worked together as a team and played an equal part in the success of U19 team in the World cup.

U19 bowling coach Paras Mhambrey

BCCI had announced in a press release that apart from Dravid and the players, rest of the support staff – Bowling coach Paras Mhambrey, Fielding coach Abhay Sharma, Physiotherapist Yogesh Parmar, Trainer Anand Date, Masseur Mangesh Gaikwad and Video analyst Devraj Raut – would each receive Rs 20 lakh.

Dravid had said he credited the success of the team to the entire support staff which had worked hard behind the scenes. He had gently pointed out the disparity. He said, “It’s a bit embarrassing at times because I tend to get a lot of attention and focus, but it is really about the support staff and the quality of people that we’ve had. I don’t want to mention names but everyone in the support staff has put in a great effort. We do the best for the kids.

Rahul Dravid had to choose between his coaching duties for the India A and U19 teams and his coaching stint with Delhi Daredevils in the IPL in 2017, as he was the center of the conflict of interest issue. Dravid willingly chose national duty over IPL contract and receives Rs. 5 crore annually for a 3 year contract with India A and junior teams.

The remaining support staff too works on contracted BCCI payrolls.
