India U-19 fast-bowler and Bengal boy –Ishan Porel, who was unsold during the IPL Auction 2018 has been a key figure in the Indian bowling line up. His four-wicket haul against Pakistan in the U19 World Cup semi-final has made his parents proud of him. Also, they have ignored the fact that their son went unsold in the IPL 2018 auctions, saying that World Cup success is much bigger  than IPL contracts.

During the event opener against Australia, Porel sustained an ankle injury but Team Management decided to keep him back in New Zealand, and he returned with a miserly five-over spell for eight runs, against Bangladesh, while grabbed four Pakistani wickets for 17 runs in 6 overs in the semifinal to help India to reach title clash against Australia on 3 February.

Ishan’s match-winning performance in his return to the prestigious tournament forced many to believe the pacer would play an important role in taking Men in Blue closer to the World Cup trophy. IPL teams might have missed the raw pace that this young boy has by not picking him for the tournament.  Although, the 19-year-old’s father –Chandranath Porel was not disappointed that he failed to crack IPL contract, as he believes that IPL will come next year and could play later, however, the World Cup is an experience of a lifetime.

Speaking to Hindustan Times over Telephone, Sr. Porel said, “The IPL is an annual affair, the World Cup an experience of a lifetime. You really shouldn’t compare or confuse the two. We (mother Rita included) tried to stay as calm and normal as possible,”

He further added, “He has been told that the semi-final is over and now the focus should all be on the final. So, while as parents we are happy with what he did today, it is over for us too and we are looking ahead to the final now.”

On being asked about his injury period, proud father signed off by saying, “Like I told you, the World Cup is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. To see him get injured left us worried and disappointed. We would speak about everything apart from cricket for those few days. His mother would ask him about the places he visited and what he ate.”
