England’s Test skipper –Joe Root is highly impressed with the captaincy skills of his One-Day skipper Eoin Morgan after their 2-0 lead in the ongoing five-match One Day series against Australia.
According to a report in The Independent Sport, Joe Root told reporters after Brisbane ODI, “How long have you got?! Eoin just turned to me. Moeen came on quite early and we saw there was some grip and hold and I was just trying to sneak some overs in. It went a little better than we all anticipated. That’s quite a smart captaincy from him to be able to juggle things round.”
Root credited Morgan for their convincing wins in the first two ODIs in Australia. Noteworthy, Morgan led England for a record 70th time, surpassing Alastair Cook as the most capped England skipper.
The 28-year-old right-hander, who smashed gritty 91* in Melbourne, was outstanding with both the ball and bat, taking two-wickets, including Australian skipper Steve Smith, in seven overs in Brisbane.
Commenting on his own performance in the second ODI, Root said, “It was enjoyable today. I didn't think I'd bowl seven overs at the start of the day, so I'm very pleased with how it's gone. It's enjoyable to get wickets at the top of the innings. The form Smith has been in this summer, it's enjoyable for me to see the back of him and hopefully that can continue.”
He concluded by saying, “Whenever you come off the back of a series loss you want to prove a point and this is a great chance for us as a one-day group to show how good a side we are away from home.”
Meanwhile, Smith rued another collapse in One Day, “It was frustrating as we got ourselves into a reasonable position with 11 overs to go, and everything fell to pieces again. We went in without the spinner on this occasion and tried to make the batting deeper but that it didn’t work as well as we would have liked. So we’re still trying to find the right balance.”
He signed off by saying, “But England outplayed us again in every facet of the game. In Sydney, it is obviously a do-or-die clash for us and we have to come out and play some better one-day cricket.”
