Virat Kohli was chosen as captain of ICC Test team of the year

Indian captain Virat Kohli was chosen to lead the ICC Men’s Test team of the Year for the year 2017 at ICC Awards 2017.

The Test team was chosen based on the performance of players during the qualification period in Test cricket. Dean Elgar of South Africa and David Warner of Australia were chosen as the openers of the Test team.

Elgar made 1386 runs in 16 Tests with 6 centuries and 5 half centuries at an average of 49.50. Warner on the other hand made 1421 runs in 16 matches with 5 centuries at an average of 49. The skipper of the team was Virat Kohli who made 2023 runs in 18 matches at an average of 77.80 with 8 centuries.

At no.4 came Australia’s Steve Smith who made 1875 runs in 16 matches with 8 centuries and at an average of 78.12. His best performance came in India where he hit 3 centuries in 4 Tests under testing conditions.

India’s Cheteshwar Pujara (1914 runs in 19 matches at 63.80 and 7 centuries), England’s Ben Stokes (1000 runs and 35 wickets with 3 centuries and 2 five wicket hauls) and South African wicketkeeper Quinton de Kock (16 matches, 1006 runs, 2 centuries at 41.91) make up the middle order of the Test team of the year 2017.

R Ashwin of India with 111 wickets in 19 Tests with 8 five wicket hauls, 3 ten wicket hauls and 616 runs was picked up as the lone spinner in the side. Australian Mitchell Starc (52 wickets in 11 Tests), South African Kagiso Rabada (76 wickets in 15 matches) and England’s James Anderson (59 wickets in 14 matches) rounded up the ICC Test team of the year in 2017.
