England all-rounder Ben Stokes was charged with affray by the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) in the Bristol pub brawl incident. The incident left a man with a fractured left eye socket and the Bristol Police department had sent their investigation files to the CPS in November.

The incident happened in early morning of September 24, outside the Mbargo nightclub in the Clifton area of Bristol.

England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) had dropped Ben Stokes from the English squad for the recently concluded Ashes series, as they said that he will not be considered for selection for England, till results of the police investigation were revealed.

26 year old Ben Stokes was charged along with two men from the brawl. A statement from the CPS said it received further material in late December. "Following a review of all the available evidence, the CPS has today authorised the police to charge three men with affray in connection with the incident," it said.

Here is the official statement released by Avon and Somerset police:

"Ben Stokes, 26, Ryan Ali, 28, and Ryan Hale, 26, are all due to appear before Bristol Magistrates' Court on a date to be fixed in relation to this charge," it continued.

Stokes was named in the England squad for the 5 match ODI series against Australia and he spent some time playing three one-day games and three T20s for Canterbury, after ECB cleared him to play. He has also been given an all-season permission to play in the upcoming IPL 2018 edition.

He was also named in the England Test squad to tour New Zealand in March, but any potential involvement remained subject to legal or disciplinary developments.

"The CPS was passed a file of evidence by Avon and Somerset Police on 29 November 2017 in relation to an incident of disorder in Bristol city centre," CPS spokesman said. "Further material was subsequently received in late December. Following a review of all the available evidence, the CPS has today (Mon, 15 Jan) authorised the police to charge three men with affray in connection to the incident."
