Soon after Glenn Maxwell was dropped from the Australian ODI squad for the limited overs series against England, a calf injury to Chris Lynn has opened up the gates for his possible return to the side.

Former Australian skipper Ricky Ponting who deems himself as a big fan of Maxwell has voiced for him to be the ideal replacement for the injured hard-hitting opener.

Ponting told Cricket Australia, “I would put him back into the squad. There was a lot made when he was left out, the chairman of selectors and Steven Smith laid it on the line pretty clearly what they wanted to see from him".

"If you think about the current team, Smith will bat at (No. 3) three, Travis Head at four, Maxwell and Mitchell Marsh or (Marcus) Stoinis in that five-six sort of area. So as long as he’s learnt his lesson and listened to what those people have had to say, absolutely I think he can go back to international cricket and dominate,” added Ponting.

Earlier in an interview, Maxwell voiced out his frustration after being ignored by the selectors saying that he will be back and will prove a point.  “I was extremely disappointed not to be in that one day side, but I completely understood the reasoning from Trevor Hohns that my last 20 ODIs haven’t been good enough. That was the phone call I received. You can’t really say too much to that " said Maxwell.
