Cameron Bancroft who was a part of Australia's Ashes-winning squad has got the back up of his coach Darren Lehmann to don the opener's role in the upcoming ODI series.

Lehmann said he was impressed by Bancroft's initiation into Test cricket. "I've been impressed with the way he's gone about it with Davey Warner," he said. "He would like bigger scores, as you always would as a batsman, but some of our starts have been exceptional, especially early on in the series, apart from Adelaide. For me you've got a young guy there learning his craft, he's got a great work ethic.

"So for me moving forward, end of the day, it'll come down to selectors but he's a good young kid, works hard; we're pretty happy with him," he added.

Asking Bancroft to open the innings, Lehmann actually wants to drive the Warner - Bancroft opening combo forward.

"(There) was a plan from them to restrict his scoring, but I thought he handled it really well, showed a bit of maturity from Davey, which was great," Lehmann said of Warner. "For him to bat a long period of time is good for him, he knows he can go both ways."
