Sri Lankan all-rounder Angelo Mathews is once again set to lead the national side in the limited overs’ cricket, as he has been reappointed as the white-ball captain by Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) on Tuesday.

As per ESPNCricinfo, Mathews said, “When I stepped down I never thought of taking over the captaincy again. But as soon as we came back from India, the president had a discussion with me. Also Hathu aiya (Chandika Hathurusingha, Sri Lanka’s new coach), and the selectors spoke to me and asked me to consider taking up the captaincy again.”

At the moment, the Sri Lankan cricket has been going through a rough patch in both Test cricket and limited overs’ cricket. Therefore, SLC decided to rope in new skipper for the white-ball cricket after Islanders’ disastrous show in the recent times, as they have lost 23 out of 29 ODIs, including a no-result, while, they suffered defeats in 10 games out of 15 in T20 cricket last year.

Mathews had stepped down from the limited-overs captaincy after Sri Lanka’s ODI series defeat at the hands of Zimbabwe at home last year.

He further added, “I took a few a few days to think about it and because of a few reasons I decided to accept. We need a stability running into the World Cup. We’ve had a few captains over the last few months because of injuries. The other captains did a good job, though we didn’t get the results. But going into the World Cup we need that stability.”

The 30-year-old all-rounder has shown his trust to the newly-appointed coach Hathurusingha, saying he is looking forward to working with the new Coach and see a positive future of Lanka with him.

Mathews concluded by saying, “I’ve also known Hathu aiya for a long time and I know how he operates. He’s not here just to survive. It’ll be very easy to work with him. Cricket has given me a lot. If I turn my back in the hour of need I’ll not have done right by cricket.”
