Former South Africa fast bowler Makhaya Ntini has resigned from the post of Zimbabwe’s bowling coach with immediate effect, as confirmed by Zimbabwe Cricket (ZC) on Sunday (January 7).

“Since his appointment in February 2016, Makhaya has brought a wealth of experience and practical knowledge to ZC, and ZC and its players and coaching staff were fortunate to have had an opportunity to work closely with him during this period, and to learn from his many years of playing for Cricket South Africa at the highest level,” the media release of Zimbabwe Cricket stated.

“And while reluctantly accepting his resignation, ZC fully appreciates and respects the reasons behind Makhaya’s decision, and wishes him all the very best for the future,” the press release further read.

40-year-old Ntini was appointed as a bowling coach in February 2016 for the two-year period. During his stint, Zimbabwe achieved some very good results despite losing the services of some of their key players.

In July 2017, Zimbabwe registered their maiden One-Day International series win in Sri Lanka that was also their first overseas triumph in eight years. Besides, they have beaten India in a T20I match in 2016.

Ntini, who retired from international cricket back in 2011 after representing South Africa in 101 Tests, 173 ODIs and 10 T20Is, had also tried his luck as a commentator before opting to coach a cricket team. Makhaya’s involvement with Zimbabwe was his first coaching stint.
