IPL 2018: Ashish Nehra and Gary Kirsten join Royal Challengers Bangalore coaching staff for upcoming season

Daniel Vettori to remain the head coach of RCB.

Ashish Nehra and Gary Kirsten will join RCB coaching staff

Former India fast bowler Ashish Nehra, who retired from all forms of the game in November 2017, has been roped in as the bowling coach by the Royal Challengers Bangalore franchise. The franchise has also hired former India coach Gary Kirsten to work as the batting coach of the team.

Ashish Nehra ended an 18-year career, in which he played 132 T20s to pick up 162 wickets. He is often regarded as the mentor for bowlers like Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Jasprit Bumrah, who have excelled in the limited overs format. This is Nehra’s first stint in coaching at any level.

Gary Kirsten has a proven track record when it comes to coaching. He was the coach of the Indian team when they won the ICC 2011 World Cup at home and before that, Kirsten helped India reach the no.1 spot in Test rankings in 2009. After finishing his stint with India, he coached his home side South Africa to the no.1 Test spot in 2012. His IPL coaching stint was rather unremarkable as he was removed from his coaching role of Delhi Daredevils after just one year in 2015.

Daniel Vettori will continue to be the head coach of RCB

Royal Challengers Bangalore has retained Kiwi Daniel Vettori as their head coach and Nehra and Kirsten will work under Vettori.

"I am excited to welcome Gary and Ashish to the coaching team for Royal Challengers Bangalore. Both of them bring a wealth of experience in cricket, which the team can learn from immensely. We look forward to an amazing season," Vettori said.

The coaching staff will have to rebuild the RCB team as the IPL 2018 player auction is set to take place on January 27 and 28.
