Two times IPL Champions Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) seems to be in a bit of dilemma concerning the retention of their captain – Gautam Gambhir. Given that Gambhir is on the wrong side of 30, KKR think tank might take a tough call prior to the IPL auction – scheduled to be held in Bengaluru on January 27 and 28.
As per the reports in Telegraph India, Gambhir’s strike-rate is the biggest cause of concern for KKR. Even though the veteran opener is among the top run-getters in IPL, his strike rate (which is an important factor in the shortest format) isn't quite up there with many other top order players in the league.
Furthermore, KKR seem to have become predictable with their approach and the spark which led them to two trophies in three years hasn't not been visible in the last two editions. A change in the leadership might just be the thing that can kick start a new wave in the KKR team.
Considering the future, it wouldn't come as a surprise if KKR retain the impactful West Indian duo of Andre Russell and Sunil Narine. India’s wrist spin sensation Kuldeep Yadav is another such candidate. However, nobody from the KKR camp has officially commented on the Gambhir front. The franchises have till 5 more days to make their decision.
Besides, there is plenty of buzz surrounding around the next edition of Indian Premier League since it will mark the beginning of the new decade in the lucrative tournament and also for the first time, cricket fans will experience viewing it on Star Sports network.
Moreover, the two controversial IPL franchises – Rajasthan Royals and Chennai Super Kings will return to the cash-rich event after completing their two-year suspension. RR and CSK were barred from the IPL for the past two seasons owing to corruption and fixing allegations against their respective owners during the 2013 edition.
Earlier this month, it has been announced that all the IPL franchises will be allowed to retain a maximum of five players through a combination of pre-auction retention and Right To Match (RTM) cards.
