Rohit Sharma played a captain’s knock in the second ODI against Sri Lanka in Mohali to give India a moral boosting 141-run victory. Team India were down and out after the humiliating 7-wicket loss in the ODI series opener in Dharamsala and Rohit was keen to make a statement.

Amidst the hazy conditions in Mohali, Rohit started his innings cautiously after being put into bat by the Sri Lanka captain Thisara Perera. However, he became a different beast altogether after completing the ton as the stand-in India skipper took only 35 deliveries to notch up his next 100 runs.

During his monumental 208* off 153 balls, Sharma smacked 12 sixes and 13 fours as India piled up a mammoth 392 runs on the board. Chasing the target, Sri Lanka crumbled under pressure and only managed 251-8 in their 50 overs.

After such a memorable day at the office, it was time for the Indian team to celebrate their captain’s achievements. In a video released by the Indian Cricket Team on social photo site Instagram, Rohit was greeted at the team hotel with a cake. Once he finished cutting the cake, teammates Ajinkya Rahane and Yuzvendra Chahal started the team tradition of putting cake on the face.

The double century was also the perfect anniversary gift for Rohit Sharma’s wife Ritika, who was in the stands at Mohali. In fact, after the match Rohit dedicated this knock to her better half.

“I am sure she would have liked this gift from me. I dedicate this knock to her as she is my strength and keeps supporting me; it was the perfect day. This is one good part about having your family around, we already go through a lot of stress in this sport and it makes our lives easier. She has been doing it for the last two years,” said Rohit in the post-match presentation ceremony.
