Former Afghanistan and India coach, Lalchand Rajput, on Monday, lauded Indian Cricket Board's (BCCI) decision to host the newly Test side- Afghanistan, for their debut Test.

On 11 December, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed that India will host Afghanistan for their first-ever Test in 2019-2020. In June 2017, Afghanistan alongside Ireland awarded Test status by International Cricket Council (ICC) and became 11th and 12th Test-playing nations.

Now, Afghanistan set to make Test debut against the number one ranked Test team in the longest format of the game after Ireland announcing their Test debut against Pakistan next year.

Speaking to Press Trust of India, Lalchand Rajput said, “It is good that they are playing their first Test against India. It will help them in all aspects, including the cricketing one and the monetary aspect. India has always been supportive to Afghanistan (in terms of cricket).”

The 55-year-old former Indian cricketer coached the Afghanistan side from June 2016 to 2017. Later, he decided not to continue with the job due to “security concerns” and with the immediate effect, Afghanistan Cricket Board had appointed Dean Jones as interim coach of new Test side in October.
