The debut ODI match didn’t turn out well for Mumbai batsman Shreyas Iyer as he managed to make only 9 runs in India’s crushing 7-wicket defeat against Sri Lanka at Dharamsala. However, Shreyas’ father Santosh Iyer was a jubilant man knowing that his 23-year-old son received his ODI cap from the legendary MS Dhoni.

"We are very happy for Shreyas for making his ODI debut on Sunday and it was an icing on the cake to have been presented cap by MS Dhoni. India's wicket -keeper is a legendary cricketer and I am sure Shreyas will get motivation from him," Santosh Iyer was quoted by Deccan Chronicle as saying.

"Shreyas could have continued playing with Dhoni and got a good score for himself which could have helped the team to get to a competitive score," he further asserted.

India now trailing in the three-match ODI series 0-1, but Shreyas’ father is quite confident that the hosts will bounce back at Mohali.

"Unfortunately we lost the match but I am sure everything is not lost. India still can win the series".

"I normally just send him positive messages and advise him to be focussed on the game. He, however, must be getting the best advice from his experienced team mates and support staff as he is representing the country," the senior Iyer opined.

Santosh Iyer – a businessman also revealed how he has done every possible thing to help his son pursue his dreams.

"I had done what any parent would do for their kids by allowing him to pursue his dreams and we supported him always," he said.

"Shreyas has really worked hard to reach this level and I wish to thank the selectors for showing faith in him," concluded Santosh Iyer.
