Rajya Sabha MP Sachin Tendulkar is in the fifth year of his six year term and is often criticized for his poor attendance record and non participation in the discussions in the house. Sachin was nominated to Rajya Sabha in April 2012, by the then UPA government and was the first active sportsperson to become an MP.

However, finally, the Bharat Ratna recipient has decided to speak up and asked for discussion on current situation of sports in India. Sachin Tendulkar has requested a short duration discussion on current condition of sports in the country.

Tendulkar submitted his request to Rajya Sabha secretariat and the discussion will most likely be listed in the winter session, which will begin on December 15.

Rajya Sabha regulations say about a short duration discussion: “Any member desirous of raising discussion on a matter of urgent public importance may give notice in writing to the Secretary-General specifying clearly and precisely the matter to be raised. Provided that the notice shall be accompanied by an explanatory note stating reasons for raising discussion on the matter in question. Further that the notice shall be supported by the signatures of at least two other members.”

Sachin Tendulkar retired from cricket in 2013 and since been nominated to the RS, has never participated in any debate or brought a private members bill. He has however asked questions of various other ministers.

In 2015, he asked the ministry of Human Resource Development about Yoga in schools and making sports a compulsory subject.

In 2016, he raised questions on employment for former sportspersons and utilization of stadiums and sports grounds.
