Virat Kohli endorses Prime Minister, Sports Minister's 'Khelo india' initiative

'Khelo India' initiative will promote 20 universities across the country as centres of sporting excellence.

In order to take country’s sports to a different level, India’s Sports Minister Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore lunched the revamped 'Khelo India' project on Wednesday. Previously, it was designed to enhance the infrastructure development but now it will look to make sure the all-round growth.

The central government has agreed to better the project by contributing Rs 1,756 crore for a period of three years. The 'Khelo India' initiative was launched by the ministry last year by collaborating three schemes - Rajiv Gandhi Khel Abhiyan, Urban Sports Infrastructure Scheme and National Sports Talent Search Programme.

The main objective of this scheme is to endorse 20 universities across the country as centres of sporting excellence. Such universities will grant the talented sportspersons to pursue their education along with their passion.

Taking to the micro-blogging site Twitter, India’s skipper Virat Kohli hailed the effort of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Sports Minister Rajyavardhan Rathore.

"'Khelo india' a much awaited initiative by our hon'ble PM & Sports Minister. Surely this will catalyse sports in India," Kohli quoted Rathore’s Tweet.

Earlier in the day, Sports Minister Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore informed about the overhaul of 'Khelo India' project.

"A holistic approach has to be taken and there will be a seamless network which will enable a pathway from schools to Olympics," Rathore, who was recently given the Sports Ministry, said after a cabinet meeting.

"In the age group of 10 to 18, health and education will be mapped and schools will be graded. Sports facilities will also be mapped with geographical location. Sports and education will be mixed," he added.
