IPL 2018: Five players unlikely to feature for Rajasthan Royals next year

Rajasthan Royals had a curiously underperformed campaign in this IPL.

It is curious and gloriously exhibiting the competition in the Indian Premier League, that a team can have the prowess and strength across all departments at the start of a season but still struggle for consistency to win games and don't go all the way. There is something that went very wrong for Rajasthan Royals, that despite having the squad to beat anyone on their day they could only win 7 of their 15 matches and somehow made their way through to the eliminator against Kolkata Knight Riders.

You go back in time and think, RR had stalwarts of stature as good as Ajinkya Rahane, Ben Stokes, Jos Buttler and young talents like Jofra Archer, Sanju Samson, Krishnappa Gotham, Shreyas Gopal, for this season and yet, it just didn't come together. Never throughout their whole season, it can be said that every department clicked for them on a day. They basically underperformed.

But they have the core to build their side around for the future. No matter how, the fact that they still reached three wins away from winning the whole league should be thought as a positive, as much it is an underachievement by them. They just need to figure out the holes that were there in the side and remove them. Most important with this intent, is the selective process of who shouldn't be featuring for them next year.

Hence, the team COC gets down to analyze and list out five such players, who shouldn't be featuring for Rajasthan Royals next year.

1. Stuart Binny

One of the things that Rajasthan Royals must do next year is that they shouldn't fall for the tendency of trying to search for things in a player who doesn't have them. It has always been seen, the moment teams try to search or find an allrounder they end up with a bits & pieces cricketer. The great all-round cricketer is an accident and not a find. Teams, when they look to build themselves, should only look for exceptionally skillfull players, players who are specialists in their department. Stuart Binny has never been an exceptional player in either of the skills and it shows game after, another. It is time Cricket and Rajasthan Royals move on.

2. Jaydev Unadkat

The auctions in the Indian Premier League is a very dynamic process as much as it is a democratic one. The players have no idea who will bid for them and how many. So, when players like Jaydev Unadkat are criticised for fetching as big a price as 11.5 cr and failing, it reflects poorly on the cricketing culture India has. But, this is a very professional world that we live in. Unadkat's basic issue throughout the season was that he failed to execute the hard lengths because he needs to get physically stronger and add more depth to his skillset. Can't be solely relying on his slower cutters that gave him success last year. It is a tough transition and the transition that Rajasthan Royals a professional cricket franchise is unlikely to provide him the time for.

3. D'Arcy Short

It seems Rajasthan Royals watched a lot of Big Bash League in January and yet, didn't watch enough. The other franchises in the Indian Premier League were smarter. D'Arcy Short was outstanding for Hobart Hurricanes untill he was put across wrist-spin. The teams in the BBL figured out that the sure short way to restrict Short is to bowl spin to him. The IPL franchises continued the trend. Being able to counter and excel playing spin has separated the best batsmen in the IPL history from the ones that haven't. Young Rahul Tripathi is an excellent player of spin at the top of the order for Rajasthan Royals.

4. Dhawal Kulkarni

He has always come across a quiet, calm, unassuming person Dhawal Kulkarni and one of the brightest young fast bowlers in Indian domestic circuit. Watching him you think he should be getting a lot of wickets for whoever he plays for but he doesn't. One gets the feeling, he isn't unleashing himself fully when he gets into his delivery stride. He just didn't have the kind of season his team was hoping from him. Kulkarni, if he is to be retained or being bid by the Rajasthan Royals next year, must become a more performing bowler than he is right now for them.

5. Heinrich Klassen

Dean Jones said it at the time when Heinrich Klassen was roped in by Rajasthan Royals in their set-up for this season. He said he believes New Zealand's Luke Ronchi was a better option to go for than the South African wicketkeeper-batsman. We all saw Heinrich Klassen put Yuzvendra Chahal and Kuldeep Yadav all around the park on more than one occasion during the Indian team's tour there and thought woww..., It is something Rajasthan Royals thought too. The luxury of an all-round cricketer who can hit it big against spin as well as the pace is something most teams envy but Klassen just didn't provide RR with that when he played. Suitability as well, one would have to say RR would be an even better team if they have Sanju Samson as their wicketkeeper and let Jos Buttler fully express himself with the bat. Heinrich Klassen doesn't fit into this equation.
